Erectile Dysfunction occurs when a man cannot achieve or maintain an erection firm enough for intercourse. It can be a sign of a physical or psychological condition.  Stress in relationships, low self confidence can cause erectile dysfunction.  The main symptom is a man’s inability to achieve or maintain an erection firm enough for intercourse.

What is erectile dysfunction?

  • Erectile Dysfunction(ED) is the failure to obtain and maintain an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse.  Estimates suggest that one in every ten men will suffer from ED in their lifetime. It is important to understand  that in most cases, ED is a symptom of another underlying problem. ED is not considered normal at any age and is associated with other problems that interfere with sex, such as lack of desire and problems with arousal and ejaculation
  • One in ten adult men suffer from chronic Erectile Dysfunction
  • Many men sometimes experience Erectile Dysfunction, which can be caused by excessive alcohol consumption, stress, relationship problems or a variety of other extreme reasons.·
  • Erectile dysfunction less than 20% of the time is not uncommon and rarely requires treatment. However, not getting an erection more than 50% of the time means there is a problem and treatment is needed.
  • ED doesn't have to be part of aging. Although some older men need more stimulation, they are still able to get an erection and enjoy sex

Reasons

·         Male sexual arousal is a complex process involving the brain, hormones, emotions, nerves, muscles and blood vessels. A problem with any of these can lead to erectile dysfunction. Also, stress and mental health problems can cause or worsen erectile dysfunction.

·         Sometimes a combination of physical and psychological problems can cause erectile dysfunction. For example, a minor physical condition that slows down your sexual response can cause

Physical causes of erectile dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction (ED) can be caused by any physical cause. Common reasons:

  1. ·         Heart disease
  2. ·         Atherosclerosis
  3. ·         High cholesterol
  4. ·         High blood pressure
  5. ·         Diabetes
  6. ·         Obesity
  7. ·         Metabolic syndrome
  8. ·         Parkinson’s disease
  9. ·         Multiple Sclerosis
  10. ·         Some prescription drugs
  11. ·         Tobacco use
  12. ·         Peyronie's disease
  13. ·         Alcoholism and other forms of drug abuse
  14. ·         Sleep disorders
  15. ·         Treatments for prostate cancer or an enlarged prostate
  16. ·         Surgeries or injuries affecting the lumbar region or spinal cord
  17. ·         Low testosterone

Psychological causes of erectile dysfunction

Starting with feelings of sexual arousal, the brain plays a key role in triggering a series of physiological events that lead to an erection. Many factors can interfere with sexual feelings and cause or worsen erectile dysfunction. Besides:

  1.          Depression, anxiety or other mental health conditions
  2.          stress
  3.       Relationship problems due to stress, poor communication or other concerns

Diagnosis

Health and sexual history examination: This can reveal conditions that lead to erectile dysfunction. It can also help your healthcare professional tell the difference between problems with erection, ejaculation, arousal or sexual desire.

Physical examination: To look for an underlying problem, for example

  • Nervous system problem: This could also be if your penis doesn't respond as expected to certain contacts.
  • Secondary sexual characteristics: Things like hair configuration can indicate hormonal problems, including the endocrine system
  • Abnormalities of the penis: These may indicate the cause of erectile dysfunction.

Lab tests: These may include blood counts, Urine Tests, cholesterol tests, and measurements of creatinine and liver enzymes. When low sexual desire is a symptom, checking for testosterone in the blood can reveal problems with the endocrine system.

  • Psychosocial Testing: This is done to help discover psychological factors that may affect your performance. Your sexual partner can also be questioned.
  • Penile ultrasound: This is used to measure blood flow in the penis

Treatment

Treatment for erectile dysfunction depends on the underlying cause. You may need to use a combination of treatments, including medication or talk therapy.

Drugs:

·         Your doctor may prescribe medication to help you manage the symptoms of erectile dysfunction. You may need to try several medications before you find one that works. The following oral medications to treat erectile dysfunction stimulate blood flow to your penis:

·         Alprostadil (Caverject, Edex, Muse) is another drug that treats erectile dysfunction. It is administered in two ways: as a penile suppository or as a self-injection into the base or side of the penis.

·         Testosterone therapy (TRT) may also be recommended if you have low levels of testosterone.

·         Medications used for other conditions can cause erectile dysfunction. Talk to your doctor about your medications and if they are causing your symptoms. There may be others you can take instead. Do not stop taking your medicine without talking to your doctor first.

Medications for erectile dysfunction can cause side effects. If you experience any unpleasant side effects, talk to your doctor. They may recommend a different medication. Learn more about medications used to treat erectile dysfunction.

Vacuum pumps:

·         This treatment uses the creation of a vacuum to induce an erection. Blood is drawn into the penis while the device is in use, resulting in an erection.

·         A vacuum pump device consists of a few different parts:

·         A plastic tube that you put on your penis

·         A pump that works to create a vacuum by sucking air out of a plastic tube

·         An elastic ring that moves around the base of your penis as you remove the plastic tube

An elastic ring is used to maintain an erection, to retain blood in the penis and prevent it from returning to circulation. It can be kept for 30 minutes.

Talk therapy:

Many psychological factors can cause erectile dysfunction, including:

·         stress

·         worry

·         Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

·         Recession

If you have psychological erectile dysfunction, you may benefit from talk therapy. In several sessions, you will discuss with your therapist:

·         Major stress or anxiety factors

·         Your feelings about sex

·         Subconscious conflicts that affect your sexual well-being

Also talk to a relationship counselor if erectile dysfunction is affecting your relationship. Relationship counseling can help you and your partner reconnect emotionally, which can also help your ED. Explore the effects of stress and anxiety on erectile dysfunction.
